Palm

I see the palm as an idealised symbol, representative of the tropics, escapism, travel and possibility. For me it is illustrative of my childhood, spent under palms along Kenya's coast. Thus, it becomes shrouded in nostalgia, almost aglow with the warmth of the places it grows.

Yet this strength of concept makes it a symbol or an idea. As much as I am interested in the concept of the idealized palm, I wish to maintain a connection to the original plant. I do this through material. I am not aiming to create a lifelike version of the palm but rather an iteration of how I see the palm, as a compellation of idealized perceptions. I wish for people to see their memories of palms as they view mine.

The palm can be traced through history as an object of admiration from Arab manuscripts detailing the importance to its involvement in Christian Palm Sunday. Altar to the palm considers these religious dedications yet presents my admiration for the plant.

There is a long history of weaving palm fronds. I wanted to familiars myself with this ancient craft. In December 2023 I spent time with a local craftsperson in Kwale, Wycliff. He taught me the harvesting and drying and braiding prosses of the Borassus flabellifer Palm.
